CDC gets 'taste' of county's lower sodium menus

CDC gets 'taste' of county's lower sodium menus

Schenectady County Officials will join with representatives from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at TOPS American Grill in Rotterdam on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at noon to get a “taste” of lower sodium menu items and review the progress made implementing a $120,000 Sodium Reduction Grant.

Schenectady County has received a $120,000 grant (each year for three years) from the CDC to raise awareness of the risk of high sodium diets, specifically to senior residents.  New York was one of five states and communities to receive funding from the CDC, and Schenectady County is one of only two Counties in New York that will implement a Sodium Reduction in Communities program.

This program aims to create a healthier food environment that provides important information to seniors to reduce their sodium intake.

Fast food consumers encouraged to count calories

GUILDERLAND - You may not think of it when you order fast food, the number of calories you're swallowing. For instance, a standard breakfast platter with pancakes? Over 1300 calories. That bacon cheeseburger combo meal?

"1010," pronounced State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah, at a media event Monday.

Health officials say that's too much, launching a campaign called "I Choose 600" to get New Yorkers to limit the calories in each meal.

"600 is the magic number because 600 times three meals plus a snack is 2000 calories we should be having a day for an average adult," said Shah.

But Shah said  too many people exceed 2000 calories a day, with larger portions and eating on-the-go.

Five Guys to raise money for Julia's Recovery Fund

Five Guys Burgers and Fries will continue their string of fundraising efforts with another event, this time benefiting the Julia Jade Sharkey Recovery Fund.

The Niskayuna branch will give 10% of all sales made on Thursday, August 5, to the recovery fund. Neighboring restaurants will also donate 10% of a sale as long as the patron says they are there in support of Julia. The stores are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and any sale made within this time is eligible.

The Julia Jade Sharkey Recovery Fund was set up to help Julia's family pay medical, food, lodging, travel, and other expenses related to the young girl's recovery from injuries sustained in a fire last month.
