Jumpin' Jack's to reopen

It's a good sign that nicer weather is on the way when Jumpin' Jack's owner Mark Lansing gets ready to open his doors for business. Lansing says the place is about 90 percent prepared to open up and they will be ready by March 29.

For Lansing, opening day has been a very special moment for decades. Except this year, just opening up period will be special. The burger and ice cream joint was forced to close one week early last summer after the Mohawk River went over its banks and flooded the area. Jumpin' Jack's was underwater.

Lansing has been cleaning since last August. It has been an overwhelming and costly task, since the flood left behind lots of debris and a muddy mess. He says he plans to install some new equipment, do some painting and fine tune everything.

Birthday Dinner

Birthday Dinner

In my family, one of the joys of a birthday -- and as we get older, we know there are many drawbacks -- is that you get to choose what will happen for dinner.  As a kid, I was always torn between my two favorite meals -- steak and pasta -- and my mother would actually make them both to keep me happy.

My brother once decided that he had to have veal cutlets for dinner after hearing them mentioned on a TV show.  When we sat down for dinner, he was horribly disappointed -- not sure what he expected, but the tiny cutlets on thin bones were not it!

This year, I asked to go the the Water's Edge Lighthouse because it's a wonderful venue -- and because my daughter works there on Thursday evenings.  In a few weeks, sitting on the patio there for lunch or dinner will be one of summer's delights, but this week we settled for a table by the window where we could watch the rain fall.

More area Friendly's close their doors

Unfriendly times continue for the Friendly's restaurant chain. Five more locations in the Capital Region have shut down.

The closed stores include both Latham locations, along with restaurants in Albany, Glenville, and the one in Colonie Center.

That leaves the Capital Region with just five Friendly's locations -- in Clifton Park, East Greenbush, Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Troy and Johnstown.

According to Friendly's website, three Berkshire County, Mass. Friendly's also remain open along with a location in Bennington, Vt.

The chain filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in October.
