Indoor rec center plans dropped

A controversial plan to build an indoor recreational facility in Blatnick Park has been dropped.

The Times Union reports that town board member Liz Orzel Kasper received word Monday that the decision has been made to abandon the proposed indoor soccer and lacrosse field. She told the newspaper she heard from Supervisor Joe Landry that the decision was made to drop the plan after he and other board members met over the weekend with the presidents of the soccer and lacrosse clubs.

Landry had been one of the strong proponents of the plan.

The proposed facility would have cost $650,000. The sports clubs would pay $200,000, the town would have used $100,000 from its parkland fund and the rest would have been bonded.

Supporters saw the facility as an investment in the youth of the town.

Jumpin' Jack's to reopen

It's a good sign that nicer weather is on the way when Jumpin' Jack's owner Mark Lansing gets ready to open his doors for business. Lansing says the place is about 90 percent prepared to open up and they will be ready by March 29.

For Lansing, opening day has been a very special moment for decades. Except this year, just opening up period will be special. The burger and ice cream joint was forced to close one week early last summer after the Mohawk River went over its banks and flooded the area. Jumpin' Jack's was underwater.

Lansing has been cleaning since last August. It has been an overwhelming and costly task, since the flood left behind lots of debris and a muddy mess. He says he plans to install some new equipment, do some painting and fine tune everything.
