Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery to Join National Memorial Day Salute to Heroes

 

NISKAYUNA - Thousands of Catholic Cemeteries across the Country will Unite for a National Program, including Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. Following is more information:

As the country begins preparations to celebrate Memorial Day, Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery  is planning to join thousands of Catholic cemeteries across the United States in a national celebration, "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes." 

In Niskayuna, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

Active military and veterans are invited to serve as lectors, participate in the presentation of gifts, and recite uniform intercessions followed by a moment of silence. Veterans attending the Mass will receive a special lapel pin.

Annual Walk/Run for Birthmarks Challenge to be held May 10

 

NISKAYUNA – The 5th Annual Day of Awareness for Birthmarks Challenge will be held May 10 to support families affected by a vascular birthmark, tumor, or syndrome.

Those who attend can participate in the 5k race, 1 mile walk or Kid’s Fun Run.  

The cost is only $15 per person, $10 per student or teams members of 5 or more, or $30 per family.

Free T-Shirts will also be given out to the first 300 registrants.

The event will be held at 5 p.m. at the Niskayuna Soccer Complex on Zenner Road in Niskayuna.

Local Army Pvt. graduates basic combat training

 

Army Reserve Pvt. Jeffery J. Coogan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Coogan is the son of Mildred Bergmann of Little York Road, Cobleskill, and grandson of Babra Morrison of Duansburg Road, Schenectady.

He is a 2010 graduate of Schenectady High School.

NISKAYUNA - Air Force Airman 1st Class Enrique S. Caceres graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Caceres earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is the son of Carmen Diaz of Hillcrest Village East, Niskayuna.  He is the brother of Enrique Caceres of 138th Street, Flushing.

SCHENECTADY – A formal search has begun to find a New York State Equine Medical Director.

The New York State Gaming Commission and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine announced the framework and formal search for an Equine Medical Director to oversee the health and safety of horses at all New York State Thoroughbred and Standardbred racetracks.

Local Boy Scout selected for national leadership program in New Mexico

 

BURNT HILLS – A local Boy Scout has been chosen to participate in a national leadership program. Following is more information:

A Burnt Hills Boy Scout has been selected to represent the Albany Diocese at the 2013 Saint George Trek, a national high adventure leadership program for older Catholic Scouts at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in July.

The Catholic Committee on Scouting named William T. Skelly, 15, to attend this premier event, an experience that challenges scouts with more than 200 square miles of rugged wilderness.

Skelly is an assistant senior patrol leader of Troop 34 sponsored by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Niskayuna. He has earned the rank of Life Scout. A parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Scotia, Skelly has served on the pastoral council and as a peer leader for retreats and an altar server.

Habitat for Humanity holds Bowl-A-Thon

 

SCHENECTADY – The Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County is holding ‘Bowl to Build,’ a Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser on Sunday, April 14.

The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Sportsman Bowl in Schenectady.  

Business groups, individuals, and teams are all encouraged to bowl for a good cause.

All bowlers are required to get a minimum of $50 per person in donations or sponsorships to be able to bowl.
