Nationally-acclaimed summer camp comes to Niskayuna

NISKAYUNA - A nationally-acclaimed summer camp is coming to Niskayuna. Following is more information:

Invent Now, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and fostering invention and creativity, is pleased to announce that its nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention summer program is coming to Niskayuna for 2013. 

Camp Invention is a weeklong summer day program for children entering grades one through six, created in partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. 

The program engages children to discover their own innate creativity and inventiveness through hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) content.

Niskayuna High School is hosting Camp Invention during the week of July 08, 2013 and July 12, 2013.

Local middle school students lose their hair for a cause

 

NISKAYUNA - Over 20 local students and staff members lost their hair this weekend for a great cause.

The over 20 Van Antwerp Middle School students and staff members, including Principal Luke Rakoczy all participated in the annual St. Baldrick's Day festivities by shaving their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research.

There were over 100 "shavees" at the annual event held at Proctors, and 1 in every 6 were connected to the Van Antwerp Middle School.

The event has raised $43,000 for childhood cancer research and counting.

NISKAYUNA - The Niskayuna High School German Program announced the winners of its 2013 T-Shirt Contest at an afterschool gathering on Friday.

The first place winner of the contest was 6th grader Dan Franke from Van Antwerp Middle School.

The t-shirts will be available in a couple weeks. 

Annual Hannaford Kidz Expo

 

ALBANY – On Saturday, March 2, the Eight Annual Hannaford Kidz Expo will be held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.

Presented by the new York State Office of General Services the Hannaford Kidz Expo provides families entertainment and education featuring dance and theatre performances, wildlife experts, music, arts and crafts, sports activities and more.

Featured performers this year include Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey CircusFit and a Barney Sing-A-Long as well as interactive activities such as the Reptile Adventure Room, Roaming Railroad, face painting, balloon animals and more.

Admission is free, the expo is from 10-5p.m. For more information, PLEASE VISIT. 

Local elementary school holds Open House

 

NISKAYUNA- The RiverRun Community Montessori will hold an open house on Feb. 10 from 2-4p.m.

Parents and prospective students can tour the facilities, observe the students’ works, and talk with the school administrators. 

The school is located on 2117 Union Street in Niskayuna.

Library to hold new 'Monday Noon' program Feb. 4

SCHENECTADY - The Schenectady County Public Library is offering a series of Monday Noon programs at the central library on 99 Clinton Street in Schenectady.

On Feb. 4 Dr. Alice Green will review The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander.

The programs are held in the McChesney Room beginning at 12:00 pm.

All are open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch. Beverages are available for a nominal fee.

CLIFTON PARK - The Clifton Park Halfmmon Library will hold a PJ Story Time Program.

The program will take place on Monday evenings from Jan. 28- Feb. 18 at 5:45 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. in the Children'sLibrary Upstairs.
