Town of Niskayuna releases annual Draft Stormwater Report

 

NISKAYUNA – The Town of Niskayuna has released their annual draft stormwater report.

This report summarizes the past year’s progress of the work done to reduce the discharge of pollutants from the Town’s storm sewer system.

This effort is part of a General Permit for Stormwater Discharges obtained from New York State in 2008 requiring the town to develop, implement, and enforce a Stormwater Management Program.

The annual report is available for public review, and comments will be accepted until May 28.

Grants Boost Erie Canal education, preservation, and tourism

 

SCHENECTADY – Congressman Paul Tonko joined representative from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor to announce $45,800 in grants to assist organizations with telling the story of New York’s legendary canals through education, preservation, and tourism projects.

Nine organizations from Albany to Buffalo received funding, including three in the Capital Region: American Locomotive Company Heritage Museum, Capital Repertory Theatre, and New York State Bicycling Coalition.

SCHENECTADY - Schenectady County is now accepting applications from land owners interested in becoming part of the County’s agricultural district. 

Under New York State Law, the County is required to establish an annual review period to give land owners an opportunity to request inclusion in the Agricultural District.

Applications will be accepted until February 1.

NISKAYUNA – Birchwood Elementary school is offering a unique nature event on Friday, Dec. 7. from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Following is more information:

Come to Birchwood Elementary this Friday, December 7 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. and explore nature with us.

Touch actual animal artifacts; see live birds of prey, snakes, geckos, a tortoise, and more; learn about gardening and composting; make your own solar greenhouse project; take a tour of the nature trail that Birchwood hopes to restore; and more!

'Green' graves now available in Niskayuna

NISKAYUNA - There's a new trend sweeping the nation that enables people to be environmentally friendly in the after-life. It's called a natural burial or a “green” burial.

The first green burial site in the state is in Niskayuna at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. A dedication ceremony was held this morning.

Green burials use biodegradable caskets or shrouds. The grounds are managed without the use of pesticides.

Civil War Tours held at State Capitol

ALBANY - Once again the New York State Office of General Services will be holding the popular Capitol Cival War Tour.

The tour, titled "1862 Red, White, and Battered," will be led by a guide in Civil War costume, and highlight the imagery from that war in the buildings carvings and murals.

The tour will alos emphasize the symbolism of regimental flags and will include a close look at some of the historic flags in the New York State Battle Flag Collection.

The historic flags were conserved by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation in partnership with the New York State Military Museum.

The tours begin on Thrusday, September 6, and will be offered on the first Thursday of every month at 5:30p.m.
