On Tuesday, April 9, Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops around the world will host the 34th annual Free Cone Day.

The Annual event is a ‘thank-you’ to fans.

The event also and celebrates the introduction of three new Greek frozen yogurt flavors.

ALBANY – Beginning on April 8, customers who shop at Hannaford Supermarkets will have the chance to give back to their community when recycling.

Customers who return deposit valued bottles and cans at Hannaford locations is New York will have the option to donate the money to local charities.

The first beneficiary will be the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Northeastern New York.

The program will be offered at 22 Hannaford store throughout the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

Customers can participate by either dropping off their bottles to a Greenback staff member or by pressing the option on one of the TOMRA reverse vending machines.

The program runs through May 31.  

Missing Persons Day brings together families across NYS

Dozens of people from across the state gathered today to remember missing loved ones in Albany. The 12th annual Missing Persons Day brought families together at the New York State Museum. The event is organized by Doug and Mary Lyall, whose daughter disappeared in 1998.

Pictures of missing loved ones on display in one are of the state museum, this as relatives gathered for support and to reflect.

“Every single one of these people here have a different story and everyone of them have emotions,” emotions Mary Lyall says keep them up at night wondering and hoping one day their loved ones will be found.

Nelligan arraigned in beating death

SCHENECTADY – A woman was arraigned Friday on murder and manslaughter charges.

Police say 43-year-old Gloria Nelligan beat 8-year-old Sha'hiim over a two day period.

He died from hypovolemic shock, (shock caused by severe blood or fluid loss) and cerebral edema (an excess accumulation of fluid in the intracellular or extracellular spaces of the brain.)

Despite arguments from her attorney, bail was denied, so she remains in the county jail. The judge also issued an order of protection for three of her daughters, who are also witnesses in the case.

ALBANY – Governor Cuomo is inviting all New Yorkers to their favorite state park or historic site on Saturday, May 4, a part of the Second Annual I Love My Park Day.

Volunteers who want to support clean-up and beautification efforts at sites across the state, including areas effected by recent disasters are encouraged to sign up.

“Last year, thousands of New Yorkers turned out to show their support for New York’s state parks and historic sites by volunteering at the first-ever I Love My Park Day,” Governor Cuomo said. “I am pleased to again invite New Yorkers to participate in this annual volunteer initiative to help clean and spruce up these great state assets which play a significant role in our tourism industry and economy. This year, there are especially worthwhile projects at facilities that experienced devastating damage from Superstorm Sandy last fall and can benefit greatly from the efforts of New Yorkers.”

Upstate NY utility to clean former coal gas site

 

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency has finalized a plan to clean up additional contaminated soil and ground water at the site of an old coal gas manufacturing plant in Saratoga Springs.

Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation is expected to do the work and pay for the $6.5 million final phase of the cleanup.

The EPA issued its first cleanup plan for the so-called Excelsior site in 1995. It found contaminants in the ground water and soil on the Niagara Mohawk property, at a former skating rink, in stream sediment, and the former Spa Steel property.

During the first cleanup, contaminated soil and sediment were removed from areas containing coal tar waste.

Similar cleanups at former manufactured gas plants have been going on for decades in New York and other states.

Cruz arraigned in deadly chase

ALBANY - A Schenectady man has been arraigned on murder charges in the case of a bicyclist who was run down in Albany last year.

Pablo Cruz was arraigned on murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

Prosecutors say he ran over 45-year-old Paul Merges while on the run from police.

Merges became tangled in the roof rack and was trapped for the rest of the chase, which went through Albany and Schenectady counties, at almost 100 miles an hour.

Merges, a father of two, was killed.
